Now, imagine this: six tables full of knitters

Knitting Out at the Temescal Cafe (brilliant - none of us had to cook or serve)

Pamela, my knitting pal, and I went together.

We felt better about meeting a restaurant full of strangers if we had each other. We shouldn't have worried. It went like this: knit, blab, knit, pet the marmalade cardigan, knit, blab, knit, knit, knit, feel the alpaca sweater, blab, blab, knit, knit, oops! Rip, rip. Time for a lunch break. Blab, blab, knit, blab, feel the other alpaca sweater, knit, blab, knit, blab, meet the "Mystery Guest" (Claudia, who came with her sister Red Silvia ), blab, knit, blab, blab, knit - at this point, some people went shopping at Article Pract - blab, knit, knit, blab, knit, blab, blab, blab, knit, knit, knit, oops!. Pick up a couple of dropped stitches. Time for a beer. More knitting, more blabbing. More admiration of projects ( I especially liked Emily's Hawaiian Fairisle, Janine's Fairisle caps, and Christine's flowerbasket shawl). Before we knew it three hours had gone by. It was an embarrasment of riches. I felt like I barely scratched the surface. But what was all that blabbing about? I got to know Janine, who's just moved to Berkeley from Seattle and did I mention that she is a fabulous Fairisle knitter? And her daughter, like mine, is Japan-obsessed? And then there was Emily, who just moved to the Bay Area from New Jersey. Emily is an environmental historian who's doing a post-doc at Stanford. She probably even knows about J.B. Jackson and the concept of cultural landscape. Holy Cats! I think she speaks my language. And she's a knitter.
Big bonus: I got to talk to Rachael and Lala. May I just say that Rachael and Lala are darling beyond words?

Lala wants to learn how to yodel. And she plays banjo. And she knits. That's my kind of gal.
There were so many knitters there, I couldn't possibly remember everyone's name. And everyone was working on something interesting. Now, some people I know scoff at knitting. They don't know what they're missing. This was a fun bunch of gals.
